In October in Hida Takayama, the air turns noticeably cooler in the mornings and evenings, and you can gradually sense the approach of fall foliage.
It is during this time that the town is enveloped in its most vibrant and festive atmosphere of the year, thanks to the “Autumn Takayama Festival (Hachiman Festival),” held on October 9 and 10.
From the magnificent procession of elaborately decorated festival floats set against a crystal-clear autumn sky to the “Karakuri Dedication” performances, where you’ll find yourself mesmerized by their intricate movements—not to mention the “Evening Festival” on the 9th, where the soft glow of paper lanterns flickers in the twilight—this autumnal historical spectacle is a must-see with endless highlights.
Walking through the old town amid the festival’s excitement can really wear out your feet. Also, once the sun sets in Takayama in the fall, it gets chilly quite suddenly. If you’re thinking, “I want to get away from the crowds and take a short break,” or “I want to warm up somewhere before the night festival,” please stop by Takayama Café.
Enjoy a relaxing tea time at our café, letting the wonderful afterglow of the festival melt away your stress.
